Description

The general aim of this book is to introduce anthropological approaches to the interpretation of the Bible. The Bible is a collection of books that can be studied from several angles. As the Holy Scripture of Jewish and Christian believers it is received as revelation of God and as a source of faith. The Biblical writings are also read from a different perspective, namely, as historical and cultural documents. An anthropological approach to the Bible focuses on the cultural world of the ancient texts.

The main objective of this book is to sketch the cultural world of the Ancient Near East as the wider context of the Bible. By the Ancient Near East, I mean the areas of the modern countries of Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, and Egypt.

An anthropological reading of the Bible exposes aspects of the text that remain more or less concealed in other types of reading; it has its own focus and areas of special interest. It sheds light on specific issues that other readings do not emphasize. It approaches an ancient Biblical text from typically anthropological angles.
